Chronic Headaches and Migraines

Many people in Bridgewater and throughout Lunenburg County live with headaches or migraines every day.

Some headaches are mild. Others can stop you from working, driving, exercising, or enjoying time with family.

If you struggle with chronic headaches or migraines, you know how much they can affect your life.

Many people look for natural ways to reduce headache pain. One option is foot reflexology.

Why Do I Offer Reflexology for Chronic Headaches and Migraines?

One of the main reasons I offer foot reflexology for chronic headaches is that when I had only a basic, self-taught knowledge of reflexology I had a friend with chronic headaches for years and she could not find a medical diagnosis. This friend wanted me to try reflexology on her to see if it would help.

The headaches affected her daily life and nothing seemed to provide lasting relief. We agreed on six to eight weekly foot reflexology sessions. As the sessions progressed the headaches decreased in frequency and intensity. After 6-8 weeks the headaches were gone. We did not continue with the sessions. That was in 2019. Today in 2026 those headaches have not returned.

How Common Are Headaches and Migraines?

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints in Canada.

Millions of Canadians experience headaches every year.

Migraine affects approximately 8% to 12% of Canadians and is more common in women.

Many people living in Bridgewater and Lunenburg County deal with recurring headaches that affect their work, sleep, and daily activities.

What Are The Main Types of Headaches?

There are many types of headaches that affect different people and interfere with their daily activities.

Tension Headaches

These are the most common.

People often describe them as a tight band around the head.

Stress, muscle tension, and poor posture can contribute to tension headaches.

Jaw tension from clenching can also cause tension headaches and trigeminal nerve pain.

Sometimes headaches comes from the cranial bones being “stuck” and not moving properly.

Craniosacral reflexology can help release the cranial bones so the craniosacral fluid can flow as it should.

Migraines

Migraines are usually more severe than tension headaches.

A migraine is a neurological condition that often causes much more than head pain.

It may last for hours or even days.

Migraine symptoms may include:

  • Severe throbbing pain

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Sensitivity to sound

  • Blurred vision

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

Some people also experience an aura before a migraine starts. An aura may include flashing lights, blind spots, or tingling sensations.

What Are The Main Causes of Migraines?

Doctors do not know the exact cause of migraines.

However, they believe migraines involve changes in the brain, nervous system, and blood vessels.

Many things can trigger a migraine, including:

  • Stress

  • Poor sleep

  • Hormone changes

  • Certain foods

  • Bright lights

  • Strong smells

  • Dehydration

  • Weather changes

  • Neck and shoulder tension

Many people in Nova Scotia report that changing weather patterns and barometric pressure can trigger migraines.

Migraine triggers are different for everyone.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches and Migraines have some symptoms in common, but they are not the same.

They have some similar causes, but also some important differences.

Some people have both.

What Are the Differences?

Onset is rapid.

Usually last from 15 minutes to 2 hours.

They come in groups, multiple times a day or week for a period of time and then go away for a while.

Often give a sense of restlessness.

Frequently they occur around one eye and the eye may get watery or puffy as well as getting nasal congestion on the same side of the face.

The usual medications for migraines do not usually help cluster headaches.

Sinus Headaches

These headaches occur when the sinuses become inflamed.

Pressure often develops around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead.

Sinus headaches are very common in Lunenburg County the spring and summer months with a lot of pollen in the air.

Headaches, Migraines, and Autoimmune Conditions

People living with autoimmune conditions often report frequent headaches and migraines.

Researchers are still studying the connection. However, inflammation, stress, fatigue, poor sleep, and nervous system changes may all play a role.

Conditions such as Lupus can affect many systems throughout the body. During periods of increased symptoms or flare-ups, headaches may become more common.

Headaches and migraines are often associated with MS, Hashimoto’s, Sjogren’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Celiac Disease.

Many people living with autoimmune disease also experience chronic pain, muscle tension, poor circulation, fatigue, and disrupted sleep. These factors can contribute to recurring headaches.

How Do People Live With Chronic Headaches?

Living with chronic headaches can be challenging.

Many people plan their lives around pain.

Some people will avoid social events to avoid a headache.

They may miss work.

Worry about when the next headache will start may add to their stress.

Some people take medication regularly.

Others try exercise, massage, relaxation techniques, physiotherapy, or reflexology.

Many use a combination of treatments.

Treatment depends on the type of headache.

How To Know Which Type of Headache I Have

Many people find it helpful to:

  • Keep a diary of your headaches with details of intensity, frequency and duration

  • Track triggers

  • Make a food diary

  • Seek professional care

Keeping track of these details will help your medical professional to diagnose and treat your headaches.

How Can I Make Headaches Go Away?

The best approach depends on the cause.

Helpful strategies may include:

  • Improving sleep habits

  • Drinking more water

  • Managing stress

  • Improving posture

  • Regular exercise

  • Reducing muscle tension

  • Practicing relaxation techniques

  • Building a support system

  • Supportive natural therapies

If headaches are frequent, severe, or changing in pattern, medical assessment is important.

What Treatment Is Effective for Chronic Migraines?

There is no single treatment that works for everyone.

Treatment may include:

  • Prescription medications

  • Physiotherapy

  • Massage therapy

  • Lifestyle changes

  • Stress management

  • Relaxation techniques

  • Reflexology

Can Foot Reflexology Help Headaches?

Foot reflexology is a gentle therapy that involves applying thumb or finger pressure to specific areas of the feet.
These areas correspond with different parts of the body.
Many people report feeling deeply relaxed during treatment.

Stress and tension are common headache triggers.

When the body shifts out of a constant stress response, muscles relax and circulation improves. When the nervous system relaxes so do the nerves that sense pain and pain is reduced or often goes away completely as in the case of my friend referred to at the beginning of this article.

Her results inspired me to learn more about reflexology and ultimately motivated me to become certified. Since then, I have worked with many clients from Bridgewater and across Lunenburg County who are looking for a natural approach to managing headaches, migraines, stress, and tension.

Of course, every person is different. No therapist can guarantee the same results for everyone. However, seeing such a dramatic improvement showed me the potential that reflexology may have in supporting people who live with chronic headaches and migraines.

Researchers continue to study natural therapies that may help reduce migraine symptoms.

A 2025 randomized controlled trial found that foot reflexology significantly reduced migraine severity and duration when used alongside standard medical treatment.

Earlier research involving people with migraines and tension headaches also reported improvements in headache symptoms and overall well-being following reflexology treatments.

How Do I Approach Headaches and Migraines Holistically at Reflex 7000?

At my reflexology clinic in Bridgewater, many clients seek treatment because of chronic headaches, migraines, neck tension, and stress-related symptoms. Because chronic headaches and migraines have so many different causes, when a new client comes to me I begin with a full health history questionnaire.

We explore diet, exercise and sleep habits, stress, injuries, illnesses, medications and all the details surrounding the headaches. Sometimes we find the root cause goes back a lot further than the headaches.

Maybe it was a long forgotten head injury or concussion, or perhaps jaw tension from many years of clenching, or tension build-up in the neck and shoulders that we’ve just gotten used to and don’t feel any more. The body is all connected from head to toe and the fascia transmits the pain from one part of the body to another. Maybe it’s “all in the head”, but maybe it isn’t.

My goal is to find out why the headaches are happening and treat the root cause through special reflexology techniques.

I have found that often craniosacral reflexology proves to be very effective in treating headaches especially in people who have had a concussion or have a lot of jaw tension from clenching.

I recently treated a client who has to use a bite guard for the clenching problem. She was experiencing headaches and was aware that it was coming from clenching. She noticed improvement after one session, but it took three sessions for complete resolution of the problem.

Craniosacral reflexology was the key technique I used to help her.

Reflexology does not claim to cure migraines.

However, many people find that regular sessions help them:

  • Feel more relaxed

  • Sleep better

  • Reduce stress

  • Decrease muscle tension

  • Improve overall well-being

  • Experience fewer headache days
